India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in cybercrime between 2025 and mid\u20112026, driven by rapid digitisation, fintech proliferation, and sophisticated social\u2011engineering scams. During 2025 alone, over 28 lakh cybercrime complaints were recorded on official platforms, with estimated losses of about \u20b922,495 crore, even as digital arrest scams, investment frauds and sextortion expanded nationwide. The period also saw nation\u2011state backed campaigns during Operation Sindoor, large\u2011scale attacks on critical infrastructure and banking systems, and high\u2011value fraud networks operating from abroad.[1][<\/sup>2][3][<\/sup>4][5][<\/sup>6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “top” cybercrime cases in 2025\u20132026 can be selected either by financial impact, number of victims, legal importance, or their illustrative value for India\u2019s evolving cyberlaw framework. She was kept under virtual confinement and repeatedly coerced to transfer funds to multiple accounts, highlighting how sustained psychological manipulation can override normal suspicion.[^13]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another widely reported case, a woman in Gurugram lost about \u20b95.85 crore (\u20b958.5 million) to similar digital arrest fraudsters and later questioned why her bank did not intervene despite multiple large transfers. Her case, taken up before consumer fora, raises issues of banking due diligence, real\u2011time fraud analytics and customer\u2011protection standards for vulnerable users.[^8]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Cross\u2011Border Dubai\u2011Linked \u20b9250 Crore Cyber Fraud Network<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In July 2026, Gujarat Police\u2019s cyber unit uncovered a Dubai\u2011linked cyber fraud network alleged to have siphoned off over \u20b9250 crore through coordinated online scams. Cryptojacking detections reached about 6.5 million, while network\u2011based exploits exceeded 9.2 million, frequently targeting WordPress plugins, Apache Tomcat and SysAid systems. Geographically, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi emerged as the most affected states, and sectors like education, healthcare and manufacturing accounted for almost 47% of detections. 10. Multi\u2011State Crackdowns on Cyber Fraud: Odisha \u2018Cyber Kavach\u2019 and Myanmar Scam Hub Rescues<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Police forces have launched large\u2011scale crackdowns on cyber fraud networks, notably the Odisha Police \u2018Cyber Kavach\u2019 operation and international rescues from Myanmar\u2011based scam hubs.
