Sentences which Magistrates may pass.\u2014<\/strong> (1) The Court of a <strong>Chief Judicial Magistrate<\/strong> may pass any sentence authorised by law except a <strong>sentence of death<\/strong> or of <strong>imprisonment for life<\/strong> or of <strong>imprisonment for a term exceeding seven years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) The Court of a <strong>Magistrate of the first class<\/strong> may pass a sentence of <strong>imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years<\/strong>, or of fine not exceeding <sup>1<\/sup>[ten thousand rupees], or of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) The Court of <strong>Magistrate of the second class<\/strong> may pass a sentence of<strong> imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year<\/strong>, or of fine not exceeding <sup>2<\/sup>[five thousand rupees], or of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(4) The Court of a <strong>Chief Metropolitan Magistrate<\/strong> shall have the powers of the Court of a <strong>Chief Judicial Magistrate<\/strong> and that of a <strong>Metropolitan Magistrate<\/strong>, the powers of the Court of a <strong>Magistrate of the first class.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Subs. by Act 25 of 2005, s. 5, for \u201cfive thousand rupees\u201d (w.e.f. 23-6-2006).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subs. by s. 5, ibid., for \u201cone thousand rupees\u201d (w.e.f. 23-6-2006).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Section 29.
