The Federal Reserve of the United States increased its key interest rate by 0.75 percentage point. | The Federal Reserve of the United States has raised interest rates for the first time since 1994. The policy rate has been hiked to a range of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent by the central bank. In the months ahead, the Federal Reserve predicts a sluggish economy and increased unemployment. The abrupt tightening of interest rates may result in a recession. A recession is a period of diminishing economic performance that lasts many months in an economy. In most cases, negative growth occurs for two quarters in a row. High unemployment, a drop in productivity during the early stages of the recession, a drop in real income, a drop in real GDP, a drop in consumer expenditure, and so on are some of the effects of the recession. |
The British government will introduce legislation to amend the Northern Ireland Protocol’s stipulations. | The bill aims to cut down on customs procedures and paperwork for commerce between the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. The European Commission has launched two new legal processes against the United Kingdom in reaction to this news. Northern Ireland remained the sole constituent after Brexit that had a land border with an EU member, namely Ireland. Checks would be required due to the differences in product standards between the EU and the UK. As a result, the Northern Ireland Protocol permits Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom to undertake border inspections. Northern Ireland remains a member of the European Union’s single market. England, Scotland, and Wales make up the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Brexit is the United Kingdom’s (announced in 2016) withdrawal from the European Union, which took effect on January 31, 2020. The European Union is a 27-country economic and political union. The EU is a single market that permits products and people to circulate freely. The euro is the European Union’s currency. |
A successful training launch of the Prithvi-II missile was carried out on 15 June 2022 from ITR, Chandipur. | This missile was developed by the DRDO and BDL as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). The Prithvi-II is a short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a single fuel tank. It has a range of roughly 250 kilometres and a payload capacity of one tonne. The missile’s range was increased to 350 kilometres. To achieve its target, the cutting-edge missile employs a sophisticated inertial guidance system and a manoeuvring trajectory. In 2003, the missile was accepted into India’s Strategic Forces Command. The ‘Prithvi’ missile was the first to be developed as part of the IGMDP. There are three versions of the Prithvi missile: Prithvi I (SS-150): Army version with 1000 kg payload capacity Prithvi II (SS-250): Air force version with 500 kg payload capacity Prithvi III (SS-350-2 stage fueled missile): Naval version with 1000 kg payload capacity Dhanush Missile is a variant of Prithvi III missile which has been developed for the Indian Navy. |
Researchers have created ultra-thin heteroprotein films. | Compared to isolated protein films, they are a superior option. Thermodynamic, mechanical, and pH stability are all excellent. In comparison to other protein or plastic films, heteroprotein films are substantially thinner. They are more flexible and soft than other films. The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in Guwahati has generated ultrathin monolayer protein films with great success. Two globular proteins are used in the films: bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (Lys). The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method was utilised by the study team. Because of electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interactions, the two proteins formed a complex at pH 9.2. At the air-water contact, a monolayer complex developed. At a surface pressure of 18 mN/m, this was then transmitted to the silicon substrates. Films of such BSA and Lys protein complexes can be used to make very stable biodegradable thin films. |

University of Adelaide researchers did a study that includes an updated map of the earth’s tectonic plates. | “New maps of worldwide geological provinces and tectonic plates,” according to the research. The research delves into the development of continents such as Vaalbara, the world’s first supercontinent. Vaalbara broke apart, resulting in the formation of new supercontinents. The latest of them is Pangea. It lived between 335 and 65 million years ago. The study’s revised tectonic plate map will aid in a better understanding of earthquakes and volcanoes, as tectonic plate movements frequently cause these natural disasters. According to the study’s authors, the new tectonic plate model explains the geographical distribution of 90% of earthquakes and 80% of volcanoes in the last two million years. Existing models can only explain the distribution of earthquakes in 65 percent of cases. The last time the tectonic plate model was modified was in 2003. To the previous tectonic plate model, the new study adds the following additional microplates. South of Tasmania is the Macquarie microplate. The Indian and Australian plates are separated by the Capricorn microplate. Western North America received the most significant modification to the current plate model, according to the research. The second significant shift occurs in Central Asia. |
The study Migration in India 2020-21 was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. | The study is based on data collected in the PLFS on migration issues from July 2020 to June 2021. It distinguishes between’migrants’ and ‘temporary guests.’ The overall migration rate in India was 28.9%, with 26.5 percent in rural regions and 34.9 percent in urban areas. The female migration rate (47.9%) is greater than the male migration rate (10.7 percent ). The key reason for the increased female migration rate is marriage (in 86.8 percent of the migration cases). 42.9 percent of males moved in pursuit of work/better work/business/proximity to work/transfer. In India, 0.7 percent of the population was classified as a ‘temporary visitor’ by families. 84 percent of these temporary visitors relocated for causes linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as meeting family/relatives, job loss/unit closure/lack of work, earning member relocation, educational institution closure, and so on. The report’s conceptual framework is as follows: UPR (Usual Place of Residence): It is the place (village/town) where the individual has lived consistently for at least six months or was discovered to be living there during the survey with the intention of remaining there continuously for six months or more. Migrant: A household member whose last regular place of residence was different from the current place of enumeration at any point in the past was deemed a migrant member. The migration rate for any type of people (for example, rural or urban, male or female) is the percentage of migrants who fall into that category. Temporary Visitors: Those who arrived after March 2020 and stayed in the household for 15 days or more but less than 6 months. Temporary visitors are people whose current location of residence differs from their typical place of living for a short period of time (UPR). |
